Abstract

Objective:To observe the protective effects of Salvia miltiorrhiza on spinal cord injury(SCI).Methods:Fourteen SD rats were randomly divided into treated group and control group,7 in each group.SCI model was made by compressiom on T_(11).The 15μl of Salvia solution and 15μl NS were given subarachnoidally via intrathecal catheterization to both groups respectively. The spinal cord blood flow (SCBF) was measured pre-injury and post-injury by laser Doppler flowmetry, malonyldialdehyde (MDA) content, water content of injured spinal cord and lower limb motor function (Gale scoring) were observed within 24 hrs after SCI.Results:The SCBF lowered,MDA and water content increased dramatically after SCI.The changes of SCBF and MDA content of treated group were significantly better than those of control, the water content of injured spinal cord and the score of lower limb motor function of treated rats were also better than those of control, but the difference was insignificant. Conclusion:Salvia has protective effects on spinal cord injury by improving SCBF and alleviating lipid peroxidation.
