Abstract

Objective:To study the antioxidant effects of L-carnitine on aged mice, and to investigate its effect on the levels of SOD,GSH-PX,CAT and MDA in serum and brain tissue. Methods:The mice were divided into 5 groups:young control group, aged control group and L-carnitine treated aged mice groups(0.25,0.5,1.0 g·kg-1·d-1).The mice in L-carnitine treatment groups were orally administered L-carnitine for 4 weeks. The mice were sacrificed, and then the levels of SOD,GSH-Px,CAT activity, and also the MDA content in serum and brain tissue were examined using kit. Results:Compared with the aged control group,L-carnitine could significantly enhance the SOD,GSH-Px and CAT activity in serum and brain tissue, and reduce the MDA content dose-dependently.Conclusions:The results indicate that L-carnitine has antioxidant effects on aged mice.
