Antioxidant effects of superoxide dismutase from horsefoot blood in aged mice induced by D-galactose

Abstract

Aim To study the antioxidant effects of superoxide dismutase(SOD) from horsefoot blood in aged mice induced by D-galactose(D-ga1).Methods Ninety-six Kunming mice were randomly divided into no-treatment control group,aging model group,vitamin E group and SOD high-,middle-and low-doses groups.The control group mice were made by neck back subcutaneous injection of normal saline everyday.The mice in the rest of the groups were made by neck back subcutaneous injection of D-ga1[120 mg·(kg·d)-1].The mice in vitamin E group and SOD treatment groups were given by gavage respectively at the same time.42 days later,blood was sampled from eyeball of the mice in each group and liver,brain tissue were taken as well to detect the level of SOD,glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and malondialdehyde(MDA) in serum,liver and brain tissue.Results Compared with control group,SOD,GSH-Px activity revealed a significant decrease(P0.01) and MAD content exhibited a significant increase(P0.01) in serum,liver and brain tissue in aging model mice.Compared with aging model group,SOD、GSH-Px activity in serum,SOD activity in liver and GSH-Px activity in brain exhibited a significant increase(P0.05) and MDA content decreased in serum and brain tissue in SOD treatment group.However GSH-Px activity in liver,SOD activity in brain and MDA content in liver had no significant changes.The antioxidant effects of vitamin E group resembled those of SOD treatment group.Conclusion SOD from horsefoot blood have a certain degree of antioxidant effects in aged mice induced by D-ga1,and the targeted effects in serum are much more significant than those in liver and brain tissue.
