Abstract

The highest or ideal state of human life identified by pre-Qin Confucianism is neither a mere moral one nor a mere aesthetic one,but a special status of human existence realized by practicing humaneness(ren) with delight, which not only includes but also surpasses both morality and aesthetics within the Confucian framework. Thus it should be called the beauty and delightfulness state.
