Abstract

Objective:To study the relationship between serum concentration of vascular endothelial growth factor ( VEGF) and angiogenesis in gastric carcinoma. Methods:Enzyme linked immunosorbent assay ( ELISA) and iinmunohistochemical staining were used to detect serum VEGF coneertration and MVD of tumor tissue in 51 cases of human gastric carcinoma. Results:Serum VEGF concentration was closely correlated with the MV I) in gastric carcinoma, r = 0. 938 ( P 0. 01 ). Serum VEGF concentration was positively correlated with depth of invasion (P0. 05) , lymph node metastasis (P0. 01) , distant metastasis (P0. 01) , tumor stage (P 0.05) and histological type of tumor (P0.05). But no significant correlation with sex (P 0. 05). Conclusion: Serum VEGF concentration is closely correlated with angiogenesis in gastric carcinoma. Serum VEGF concentration may be a potential predictor for an-giogenesis in gastric carcinoma.
