Abstract

The fluorescence quenching reaction of butyl rhodamine B oxidized by bromate ion with phenol as a suppressant in sulfuric acid medium by stop-flow technique has been investigated. The reaction mechanism has been discussed.A highly sensitive and simple inhibitory kinetic spectrofluorimetric method for the determination of trace phenol based on its effect on incubation period of the reaction was proposed. The detection limit was 1.4×10~-8 g·L~-1,the linear range was 0.4~15.0 μg·L~-1and the relative standard deviation(7.0 μg·L~-1,n=11) was 2.1% for phenol. The method has been applied to the determination of trace phenol in samples of pharmaceutical wastewater and ketchup with satisfactory results.
