Abstract
Objective To study the prevalence and risk factors of carotid atherosclerosis. Methods A total of 340 patients aged from 29 to 90 were investigated by duplex ultrasonography to detect carotid atherosclerosis, and various risk factors were evaluated. Results The detection rate of carotid atherosclerosis in this series was 58.2%, in which not only the prevalence rates of hypertension, ischemic cerebrovascular disease and diabetes mellitus but also their age, systolic blood pressure, apolipoprotein, plasma viswsity, and erythrocyte aggregation index were higher than those in the subjects who had no carotid atherosclerosis. There was no correlation between carotid atherosclerosis and smoking, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein, and C-reactive protein. Conclusion Age and hypertension are major risk factors for carotid atherosclerosis.
