Abstract

nbutyl phydroxybenzoate was synthesized by the esterification of nButyl alcohol with phydroxybenzoic acid in the presence of sodium bisulfate monohydrate. The results obtained indicate that sodium bisulfate monohydrate possesses a fairly high catalytic activity for the esterification reaction. The molar ratio of phydroxybenzoic acid/nbutyl alcohol and the effect of the amount of catalyst used and the reaction time on the yield of ester have been studied. The yield of the ester obtained under the typical reaction conditions (phydroxybenzoic acid/nbutyl alcohol/ sodium bisulfate = 1 mol/ 2 mol /0.072 mol, refluxing and watersegrating for 5 h) is 92.8%. Sodium bisulfate monohydrate catalyst can be easily recovered and reused.
