A study of mirtazapine and paroxetine in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective:To compare efficacy and side effects between mirtazapine and paroxetine in the treatment of depression. Method:104 outpatients with a diagnosis of depression were randomly assigned into mirtazapine group ( n=52 ) and paroxetine group ( n=52 ) for 6 weeks.The effects and side reactions were evaluated with Hamilton depression scale (HAMD),Clinical global impression (CGI) and treatment emergent symptom scale (TESS)before and after the treatment. Results:Findings indicated that efficacy of mirtazapine was similar to that of paroxetine,but the side effects of mirtazapine were less than paroxetine,particularly in the sexual function. Conclusion:Mirtazapine is an effective and safe antidepressant.
