Comparative study of mirtazapine and paroxetine in the treatment of depression

Abstract

Objective:To compare the efficacy and safety of mirtazapine and paroxetine in the treatment of depression.Methods:65patients who met CCMD-3criterion for drepression were randomly divided into mirtazapine group(n=33)and paroxetine group(n=32).The patients in two groups were treated with mirtazapine or paroxetine for6weeks respectively.The efficacy was assessed by Hamilton depression rating scale(HAMD)and the safety was assessed by treatment emergent sympton scale(TESS).Results:The effective rate of the mirtazapine group was78.79%,the paroxetine group was75%,without remarkable difference between two groups(P0.05)。The response was rapid and side effects were slight in mirtazapine group,compared with those in paroxetine group.Conclusion:Mirtazapine is an effective and safe antidepressant.
