Abstract

Objective To explore the clinical characteristics of different types of cerebral infarction by observing the extracranial carotid artery. Methods 59 cases were diagnosed as cerebral infarction were examed by carotid artery color doppler ultrasound and angiography. The vascular abnormality from the examination would be analysed retrospectively. Results There were extracranial carotid artery stenosis and plaque in all cases.Carotid artery stenosis(50%-70%) in the cases from cerebral watershed infarction group was significantly higher than that from lacunar cerebral infarction group and carotid artery stenosis(50%) in the cases from lacunar cerebral infarction group was significantly higher than that from cerebral watershed infarction group. There were more ulcerated plaques in cerebral watershed infarction group than that in lacunar cerebral infarction group. Conclusion Extracranial carotid artery lesions is the major cause of cerebral infarction.Cerebral watershed infarction can be cause by extracranial carotid artery stenosis and unstable plaques at the same time.
