Condom use among men who have sex with men in Nanchong,a medium sized city in southern China

Objective To understand condom use among men who have sex with men(MSM)living in Nanchong city and related influencing factors.Method Convenience and snowball samplings were used to select respondents within two weeks and interviews were conducted with self-administered questionnaires with informed consent.All the data obtained were statistically analyzed by Spearman rank correlation and other software.Result Two hundred and fourteen respondents were recruited,of whom 89.7% and 96.3% had anal or oral sex with male sex partners,and 37.4% had sex with female sex partners:the rates of persistent use of condoms in the above cases were 3.4%,31.3% and 25.3%,respectively,and the rates of never using condoms were 83.5%,22.9% and 41.8%,respectively.Some factors including age,economic condition,education backgrounds,awareness of HIV risk in the MSM and their sex partners were significantly correlated with the frequency of condom use in their homo-or hetero-sex activities.Conclusion The low frequency of condom use among MSM in Nanchong may increase the risk of local HIV infection,and therefore it will be essential for the success of HIV/AIDS control and prevention to realize and emphasize the factors which influence condom use among them.
