Analysis of the factors affecting condom use among men who have sex with man in Mianyang city in 2013

Objective To understand the factors affecting the condom use among men who have sex with men(MSM).Methods Eight hundred and sixty-one MSM in 6 counties, 2 districts and a town in Mianyang city from April to October2013 were selected by snowball sampling for anonymous questionnaire with informed consent.Besides,5m L renal blood wastaken from each of the subject for laboratory test of HIV and syphilis. Results The proportions of anal sex, commercial sexand heterosexual sex of the MSM in the last six months were 89.1%,2.9%,7.9%. The proportions of condom use in the last sexof the three sexual behaviors were 89.5%, 84.0%, 41.2%,respectively exhibiting significant differences in condom use amongdifferent sexual behviors(P=0.000), the lowest use rate was found in heterosexuality. The positive rates for HIV and syphislis inanal sex MSM insisting using condoms in the last sis moths were lowere than those without insisting using condoms( P=0.011,0.002). Results of multiple Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, HIV/AIDS knowledge,with HIV rest in a recentyear, partners place, looking for partners place, HIV infection, syphilis infection were the independent factors influencingcondom use rate by MSM during anal sex in the last six months. Conclusion The condom use rate by MSM in Miangyang cityis not high, and the condom use is associated with demographic characteristics, AIDS knowledge, preventive services, ways oflooking for partners, HIV and syphilis infection.
