Abstract

ZENG Ji ze was a resourceful diplomat with plenty of brains and courage and insight.From 1878- 1886 he was sent by the emperor as an envoy to Britain, France and Russia. In the course of these 8 years he wrote a journal of about 500,000 words, recording his diplomatic activities in Europe, as well as political, economic, military, cultural, educational affairs and ways and customs of these countries, and put forward some unique views of his own about them. His journal contains a lot of valuable historical materials which provide us with a good source for research into his western ideas and his strong patriotic sentiment.
