On Artistic Innovation and Defects of Lin Shu's Short Stories

Abstract
The artistic innovation in Lin Shu's short stories to some extent broke the stagnation and rigescence that characterized the art of novel of the time, and brought vitality to the then literary circles. He was one of the earliest modern writers who learned consciously from the western fiction art, thereby significantly broadening the artistic horizon of love stories in China. His distinctive martial-art offered valuable artistic experience to the writing of Kunfu novels later. With all the defects in his novels, some of them are among the best works of classical Chinese.
