A Study of Wang Meng's Short Stories

As an evergreen in the contemporary literary circles,Wang Meng has stuck to an intellectual's feelings of heeding reality and being concerned about the nation and the people,having explored various artistic forms and techniques of fiction and striven to get his ideas and emotions across to readers effectively.Having written short stories for over five decades,he has undergone four changes in his art of short story writing—from realism to stream-of-consciousness and from the essay-style allegorical writing to the new-note style writing,thereby having contributed numerous and variegated short story masterpieces to the Chinese literary circles.Moreover,his probe into the short story style has not only given a direct impetus to the innovation of his novellas and novels but also simultaneously facilitated the development of Chinese novels as a whole.
