Contending for Being the Heir to the Throne:A Political Interpretation of Gaming of the Emperor and the Officials

Abstract

The struggle for title-conferring of the Crown Prince in Wanli period of Ming Dynasty was also regarded as contending for being heir to the throne.Centered on the heir to the throne being ZHU Changluo,the eldest son or ZHU Chang-xun,the third son,Wanli,Shenzong Emperor,started an exhaustive gaming with the officials.The entire event started with the moderate proposal by the officials,after long time of struggle the rumors were spread,at last the problem was solved with the help of the Queen Mother.According to tradition,ZHU Chang-luo,the eldest son was conferred as the heir to the throne,and ZHU Chang-xun,the third son was conferred as King Fu.Contending for being the heir to the throne was typical of the political operation of the Ming Dynasty and reflects the internal logic of political operation of dictatorship system.
