Abstract
Infante Qi of Sima You was the potential throne competitor of the faction of Emperor Wu of the Jin Dynasty.No matter nominating mentally disabled Prince Hui as the throne successor,or protecting Prince Hui's succession status,the aim was all for containing Infante Qi so as to ensure the dominance of Emperor Wu's faction.The marriage of Prince Hui and Jia Cong's daughter who was not good-looking but cunning was also to strengthen Prince Hui's political power in order to balance that of Infante Qi.During the process of succession and marriage,Emperor Wu was always the initiator with no influence from others.Explanations such as Emperor Wu did not know Prince Hui's mentality,Emperor Wu indulged Prince Hui's eldest son,or Emperor Wu was faithful to primogeniture,are not convincing.
