Clinical observation of painless artificial abortion with intravenous injection of pethidine and promethazine.

Objective To investigate the effect of pethidine and promethazine IV on painless artificial abortion.Methods Two hundred healthy women without induced abortion contraindications were randomly assigned to receive pethidine and promethazine before artificial abortion(n=100) or no pre-operative medication(control group,n=100).Pethidine 50mg and promethazine 25mg were intravenousely injected slowly.Results The analgesic effects,the degree of cervical relaxation,the incidence of artificial abortion syndrome and side effects during the operation were significantly different in favour of pethidine and promethazine group(P0.01).The total amount of vaginal bleeding was not significantly different between two groups(P0.05).Conclusion Intravenous injection of pethidine and promethazine before artificial abortion has favourable analgesic effects.It is a simple safe inexpensive supplementary measure and suitable for basic-level hospital use.
