Relationship between morning blood pressure surge and left ventricular hypertrophy in elderly essential hypertension

Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between morning blood pressure surge(MBPS) and left ventricular hypertrophy in elderly essential hypertension patients.Method With ambulatory blood pressure monitoring,the characteristics of morning blood pressure in 62 elderly patients with hypertension were analyzed.MBPS was greater than or equal to 23.6mmHg judged for morning blood pressure surge,which were named MBPS group(30 cases) and the others were allocated into NMBPS group(22 cases).The echocardiography of the patients was measured and the left ventricular mass index(LVMI) was observed.Result The LVMI of MBPS group was significantly higher than that of NMBPS group(P0.01),and morning systolic blood pressure,diastolic blood pressure,pulse pressure in patients with MBPS group were higher than that in those NMBPS group(P0.01).Conclusion Morning blood pressure surge is closely related to the development of left ventricular hypertrophy in elderly patients with essential hypertension.
