Abstract
To some extent the Opium Abolition Campaign of the ending Qing government had succeeded. But it failed in preventing the Qing Dynasty from breakdown,it accelerated instead the breakup of the 1911 Revolution. The Revolution caused social turmoil that adversely affected the Opium Abolition Campaign. In the earliest days of the Revolution the Opium Abolition Campaign was disrupted because of turbulent political situation. But once the revolutionaries consolidated their power, governments of both Central and local levels immediately adopted effective measures to prohibit opium. When Yuan Shi kai had took control of China the Opium Abolition Campaign continued. But when China fell into wars by warlords, the Opium Abolition Campaign disappeared.Revolution inevitably resulted in social sufferings, but it also give rebirth to society. When revolutionary accomplishments were denied, there were necessarily harms to social modernization. The dialectic relations between democratic revolution and social modernization is evidently revealed by the Opium Abolition Campaign.
