Abstract
Objective To investigate whether bone mineral density (BMD) of type 2 diabetic patients is lower than normal subjects or not. Method BMD of 615 diabetic patients were compared with 1116 normal subjects intergroup-matched for sex and age. Results (1)In female diabetic patients, BMD of lumbar and femoral Wards were similar to normal female subjects. In male diabetic patients, BMD of lumbar and femoral Ward were higher than normal male subjects in 50 years- (P0.05) and 70 years- age group (P0.05) and were similar to normal subjects in 40 years- and 60 years- age group. (2)In female diabetic patients, BMI were positively related to BMD. However, age and total cholesterol level were negatively related to BMD. In male diabetic patients, BMI and (insulin) level after glucose challenge were positively related to BMD. Conclusion BMD of type 2 (diabetic) patients with normal renal function is not lower than normal subjects.
