Abstract
The late Qing Dynasty is an important period when western science and technology developed in China, and also a major turning point in modern Chinese history, during which both the Qing Dynasty and Japan began to introduce western science and technology, but adopted significantly different developmental patterns, which are embodied in the core elements and external conditions of the technological development. The differences determined by the two national natures lead to different consequences. The paper compares the two countries' scientific development from 1840 to 1911,analyzes the relationship between westernized Chinese style and Japanese ethics but western civilization, and explores the reasons why modern China's technology lags behind.
