Relevance-Theoretic Approach to Interpreting Intercultural Translation

Relevance theory,a powerful theory in pragmatics,provides a pragmatic perspective for translation studies across languages and cultures.Relevance theory holds that translating is a relevance-seeking,ostensive-inferential and dynamically-adjusting process,in which the translator stands at the center of cross-cultural communication between the original author and the target readers,and searches for relevance in the source cognitive environment and makes dynamic adjustment in the target cognitive environment.Based on the cognitive point of view,the relevance theory brings forth a new understanding of the communication process and gives a reasonable account of intercultural translation process.
