Abstract

Objective To probe into the effect of calcitonin gene related peptide (CGRP) on the pathogenesis and monitoring of essential hypertension (EH). Methods Plasma levels of CGRP and Endothelin (ET) were determined before and after antihypertensive treatment in 65 cases with EH. The results were compared with those of the control group. Results The CGRP level of the cases was significantly lower than that of the control group. The higher the blood pressure, the lower the CGRP level. Moreover, the levels of CGRP and ET of the cases were in the relationship of negative linear correlation (r=-0.991, P0.001). After antihypertensive therapy, the CGRP level of the cases rose (P0.001), but was still lower than that of the control group (P0.01). Conclusion The deficiency of CGRP in the circulation might be involved in the pathogenesis of EH, determination of its plasma concentration can help to monitor the condition of EH.
