Abstract
However,Civilization got new meanings in modern China, which was translated from the English term Civilization,as indicated that the ancient Chinese term became a modern concept . Civilization became popular in the late 19th century and beginning of 20th century. This study analyzes the meanings and usages of the term Civilization in the Chinese Progress (Shi Wu Bao) and sums them up to some data in table, from which we can see that Western Learning prospered in modern China, that Japanese culture had great impact on modern Chinese intellectuals and that modern Chinese intellectuals longed for reform very intensely .
