Abstract

In this paper, the cytoplasmic male sterile lines and their maintainer lines were chosen as experimental material to study the change of endogenous hormones in pepper. The contents of endogenous hormones, including IAA,(Z+ZR),GA3 and ABA were measured by ELISA and the Ethylene production was studied using gas chromatography. Before the stage of microsporogenesis, the content of IAA in anthers is greatly higher in male sterile lines than that in the maintainer lines. But at the stage of microsporogenesis, the content of IAA is changed in flower buds and anthers. At the maturing stage of pollen grain, the concentration of IAA is reversed, and IAA in the male sterile lines are remarkably lower than that of the maintainer lines at flowering stage. At the every development stage of microsporogenesis, the concentrations of GA3 in anthers and in leaves are higher in male sterile lines than that in the maintainer lines. However,at the maturing stage of pollen grain, the GA3 content is on the contrary. The concentration of ABA is always higher in male sterile lines than that in the maintainer lines at each development stage of microsporogenesis of anthers and at the flowering stage of leaves. While there is no markable difference of pollen grain in the flower buds at the maturing stage. The productions of ethylene in pollen grain of flower buds at the maturing stage and leaves at the flowering stage are greatly higher in the sterile lines than that in the maintainer lines. The ratios of IAA/ABA,(Z+ZR)/ABA,GA3/ABA,IAA/GA3 and(Z+ZR)/GA3 all have the trends that are lower in male sterile lines than that in the maintainer lines in the flower buds, anthers and leaves at the maturing stage of pollen grain. In conclusion, the results indicate that there is a relativity between sterility and content veriety of endogenous hormones in leaves and floral organs. The deficiency of IAA,the increase of GA3 and ABA in anthers and leaves at the flowering stage, and over production of ethylene in flower buds and leaves all would lead to cytoplasmic male sterility.
