A comparative effectiveness between fluoxetine and amitriptyline in the maintenance treatments of major depression.

Abstract
Objective To study the effectiveness and the safety of fluoxetine in the duration treatment of major depression.Methods 96 cases met the CCMD-2-R criteria for major depression,with degraded percent50% on the 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating scale after they were treated in 2～3 months.Treatment with fluoxetine in 46 cases was compared with treatment with amitriptyline in 50 cases during 12 months study.HAMD and Treatment Emergent Sympton Scale(TESS) were used to assess the therapeutic efficacy and side effect.Results Fluoxetine was as effective as amitriptyline for the duration treatment of major depression,with a significant improvement rate of 90.2%,But fluoxetine produced fewer side effects than amitriptyline.Conclusions Fluoxetine was effective in the duration treatment of major depression and generall well tolerated.
