Abstract
Objective To investigate the changes of nitric oxide (NO)and glucose in cord blood in newborns with asphyxia . Methods The levels of NO and glucose in cord blood were determined in 30 newborns with asphyxia, and 32 healthy neonates. Results The levels of NO - 2 and glucose in cord blood were 27.28±9.52μmol·L -1 and 3.65±0.79mmol·L -1 respectively in the control group, and 43.74±13.20μmol·L -1 and 5.65±1.20mmol·L -1 in the asphyxia group. The levels of NO - 2 and glucose levels in cord blood in the newborns with asphyxia were much higher than those in the normal controls. The levels of NO - 2 and glucose levels in cord blood in the newborns with severe asphyxia(60.17±9.93μmol·L -1 and 7.25±0.54mmol·L -1 )were found to be significantly higher than those seen in the light asphyxia group(36.72±6.33μmol·L -1 and 4.93±0.53mmol·L -1 ,P0.01).The NO levels were significantly related to the glucose levels. Moreover, the cord blood No level was related closely to development of hypoxia-ischemic encephalopathy. Conclusion The determinations of NO and glucose in cord blood in newborns with asphyxia have important clinical significance.
