Abstract

Objective To explore the plasma level of brain natriuretic peptide(BNP) in patients with elderly congestive heart failure(CHF).Methods Eighty nine CHF patients were treated with diuretic and angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor. The plasma levels of BNP were detected before and after treatment and cardiac function were measured by Doppler echocardiography.Thirty normal people were enrolled for control. Results Compared with control group, the levels of plasma BNP in CHF patients elevated significantly(P0.001),and the left ventricular ejection fraction(EF) increased significantly(P0.01). The level of plasma BNP negatively correlated with EF in CHF patients(P0.05).The level of plasma BNP and EF in CHF patients had significant differences before and after treatment(P0.05).Conclusion Plasma BNP level has a relationship with cardiac function and it maybe a good biomarker to evaluate the cardiac function of CHF patients.
