Abstract

Objective To investigate the nutritional status of selenium and iodine of pregnant women in Guangzhou. Methods The urinary iodine were measured by spectrophotometer.Content of tetraiodothyroxine(T 4),thyroid stimulating hormone(TSH)in serum were determined by radioimmunoassay (RIA).The selenium in whole blood were determined by fluorometry. Results The selenium concentration in mid-pregnant blood and later-pregnant women blood was (0 137?5±0 096?9)μg/ml and (0 152?8±0 085?9)μg/ml,respectively.The median of urinary iodine in mid- and later-pregnant women was 249 3 and 241 2?μg/L,respectively.The proportions with urinary iodine100?μg/L in mid- and later-pregnant women was 4 5% and 12 5%,respectively.The average T 4 level in mid-pregnant women was (157 0±66 4)nmol/L,58 2% of whom were within 54-174?nmol/L (recommended rang). The average T 4 level of later pregnant women was (124 4±59 4)nmol/L,78 3% of whom were within 54-174?nmol/L.The proportion of TSH5?mU/L in mid-pregnant was 34 3% and was 81 8% ( P 0 01) in later pregnant. Conclusion The pregnant women in Guangzhou had good nutritional status of selenium and iodine. The proportion of TSH5?mU/L in later pregnant women was high (81 8%).
