On Major Differences between Generative Grammar and Cognitive Grammar

Abstract

According to Generative Grammar,language is arbitrary,self-contained formal system independent of other cognitive faculties.According to Cognitive Grammar,language is a symbolic representation of objective world,human cognition,socio-culture,and is usage-based.This paper attempts to make a contrastive analysis between Generative Grammar and Cognitive Grammar from the perspectives of arbitrariness vs iconicity,minimalist vs maximalist,module vs non-module,strata vs stratum,and mental vs holistic views.
