Abstract

Generative grammar is a modern linguistics school set up by Chomsky in the end of 1950s.The publishing of Syntactic Structures in 1957 declared its coming into being.Chomsky proposed the innateness hypothesis and tried to describe and explain language production.However,the cognitive grammar is developed in the course of anti-generative grammar.This paper talks about the background and the philosophical basis for both generative grammar and cognitive linguistics.And its focus is the passive voice which is analyzed in the perspectives of generative and cognitive grammars.
