Theory on the Confucian Millennium and the Ideal of Utopian Modernization——An Analysis of Zhang Jians View of Modernization

Zhang Jian was a pioneer in China's early modernization. His exploration of China's modernization was seriously restricted by his traditional cultural values. While trying to pursue western appliance , he was infatuated with oriental spirit. He worked out the ideal mode of modernization in Nantong by grafting Euro-American utensil and form onto ancient Chi-na's ethical society. But the ideal mode of modernization of the Confucian Millennium was a U-topia. Zhang Jian's values encouraged the development of his cause and yet led it to failure.
