Abstract

AIM: To investigate the changes of expression of adhesion molecules CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils and monocytes in different types of patients with coronary heart disease (CHD). METHODS: The expression of CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils and monocytes were measured by direct immunofluorescence techniques associated with flow cytometry in 49 patients with angina pectoris confirmed by coronary arteriography, 30 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and 20 normal individuals. RESULTS: Expressions of CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils and monocytes in the CHD patients were markedly higher than those in normal cases( P 0.01),and the expressions of adhesion molecules CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils and monocytes in patients with unstable angina pectoris and AMI were significantly higher than those in patients with stable angina pectoris( P 0.01). No change was observed in neutrophil and monocyte counts in patients with angina pectoris ( P 0.05), WBC' counts in AMI patients were markedly higher than those of the normal cases. The expression of adhesion molecules CD11b/CD18 on neutrophils and monocytes in AMI patients bore no relation to increased infarct extent. CONCLUSION: Neutrophil and monocyte CD11b/CD18 adhesion molecules in patients with CHD had a higher expression, and the increased degree of expression might be related to the types of myocardial ischemia.
