Abstract

Cr alloy powders were added into compacting blocks of self-propagation high temperature synthesis(SHS) to produce in-situ TiC reinforced steel matrix composites on a steel substrate, and their effect on the microstructure and hardness of the composites was investigated. The results show that Cr was dissolved in cementite in the matrix, which can obviously refine the TiC particles fabricated by SHS,and slightly reduce the hardness of the composites, but harden the substrate near the composites and improve the hardness grade between the composites and the substrate. The SHS mechanism of TiC was discussed with addition of Cr.
