Abstract
MnFe alloy powder was added into compacted TiC particle block for producing in-situ TiC reinforced steel matrix composites on a steel substrate using self-propagation high temperature synthesis(SHS) technology;and the effect of the powder on the microstructure and hardness of the composites was investigated. The results showed that addition of MnFe can significantly refine the TiC particles, slightly reduce the hardness of the composites, increase the hardness of the substrate near to the composite, and therefore improve the hardness gradient between the composite and the substrate. The SHS mechanism of TiC with addition of MnFe was discussed.
