Abstract

Objective To investigate the relationship between sleep quality and mental health status among the first group of military preliminary medical sergeant students and supply scientific advices to improve their sleep, promote and serve for their education. Methods A total of 528 military preliminary medical sergeant students were selected from a military university by a random sampling method and surveyed by a self-evaluation questionnaire including Pittsburgh sleep quality index(PSQI)and Symptom Checklist 90(SCL-90).Results 23.1% preliminary sergeants had sleep disorder. The top three PSQI factors were subjective sleep quality, daytime dysfunction and sleep duration.Male military students were better than female students in sleep quality and daytime dysfunction(P0.05).The students of different education backgrounds had significant differences in subjective sleep quality, sleep latency, sleep disturbances and daytime dysfunction scores(P0.05).Beside use of sleeping medication, all the other PSQI factors had strong correlation with the SCL-90 factors.Multiple linear regression analysis showed that factor depression, somatization, interpersonal sensitivity, schizophrenia, paranoid of SCL-90 had significant effect on PSQI scores. Conclusion The sleep quality of military preliminary medical sergeants needs to be improved.Sleep quality is highly correlated with mental health status. The school management should pay more attention to the sleep quality and take measures to ensure the sleep quality.
