Endoscopic sinus surgery for chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps

Abstract

Objective To investigate the long-term therapeutic results of endoscopic sinus surgery(ESS).Methods Sixty patients(107 sides) with chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps were treated with ESS,and were followed up for 1 year after operation.Results Thirty-nine patients were cured(65.0%),sixteen patients achieved symptomatic relief(26.7%),five patients remained unchanged(8.3%),with response rate being 91.7%.The major complication was adhesion of nasal cavity.Conclusion ESS has an ideal effect on chronic sinusitis and nasal polyps.Careful manipulation of middle turbinate,inferior turbinate and nasal septum,and regular follow-up are important to reduce complications.
