Abstract
The southern North China basin in the late Paleozoic was characterized by an epicontinental shallow marine setting. In this paper, based on sequence stratigraphic data, late Carboniferous-early Permian succession in the Southern North China basin can be divided into three third-order sequences(Sq1-Sq3),which correspond to the Late Carboniferous Bashkirian-Gerschel stage, early Permian Zisong Stage, and Early Permian Longlin Stage, respectively. The characteristics of these sequences are described. The results indicate that the epicontinental sea was filled with regressive sequences, with sediments coming mainly from the Kageyama uplift.A transgressive inversion surface is present between Sq1 and Sq2.The late Paleozoic paleogeographic history of the southern North China basin was controlled by global sea level changes and regional tectonic events.
