Abstract
Objective: The effects of two kinds of pit and fissure sealants on the prevention of child caries were compared so as to select the material that was more suitable for the community hospitals to develop pit and fissure sealant. Method: Three hundred and eighty-eight fully erupted first permanent molars were chosen from 97 children aged at 7 to 8 and the self-contrast was adopted. The left two molars of each child were put into the experimental group and given surgery with fluoride-containing pit and fissure sealant. The right ones were put into the control group and given surgery with light curable pit and fissure sealant. The rates for sealant dropping-off and caries occurrences were regularly checked and their effects were compared. Result: It was found that the one-year and two-year dropping-off rates and caries occurrence rate of the group using fluoride-containing pit and fissure sealant were significantly lower than those of the group using light curable pit and fissure sealant, and data had obvious difference (P 0.05). Conclusion: Fluoride-containing pit and fissure sealant is lower than light curable pit and fissure sealant in respect of the long-term sealant dropping off rate and the prevalence of young permanent fissure caries, which is worth popularization at the community and schools.
