Treatment of proliferative diabetic retinopathy by vitrectomy

Abstract

Objective To study the effect of vitrectomy on proliferative diabetic retinopathy(PDR).Methods Sixty-three eyes with PDR in 54 patients undergone standard vitreoretinal surgery were analyzed retrospectively,and the causes of poor sight after operation were summarized.Results The follow-up period was 5 to 24 months.After surgery,visual acuity improved in 48 eyes(76,19%).In the 63 eyes,the number of eyes with visual acuity(VA)=0.01 were increased from 23(36.51%)to 49(77.78%),and the number of eyes with VA =0.1 were increased from 3(4.76%)to 27(42.86%).There was no marked change in 8 eyes(12.70%),and a little descent in 7 eyes(11.11%).And the proportion of the improved eyes was higher in stage IVand V(84.78%)than in stage VI(52.94%).Conclusion Vitrectomy is an effective treatment for PDR.The key factors influencing postoperative visual acuity are right timing of operation and decreasing of operative complications.
