Double-blind study of fluoxetine augmented with olanzapine in the treatment of treatment-resistant depression

Abstract

ObjectiveTo study the therapeutic and side effects of fluoxetine augmented with olanzapine for patients with treatment-resistant depression.Methods A 8-week double-blind study was conducted with 52 patients with treatment-resistant depression . Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: fluoxetine plus placebo, fluoxetine plus olanzapine. All subjects were rated with Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression(HAMD), Clinical Global Impression(CGI),Asberg Rating Scale for Side Effects before treatment and every 2 week after treatment .Results The therapeutic effect of fluoxetine plus olanzapine was significantly better than that of fluoxetine (P 0.05). There was no significant difference of score of Asberg Rating Scale for Side Effects between two groups (P0.05).Conclusion Fluoxetine augmented with olanzapine is an efficacious and safe strategy for treating treatment-resistant depression.
