Abstract

Objective To observe the effects of the Shugan Jianpi Decoction on the rat model of visceral hypersensitivity and to probe into its mechanism for the treatment of irritable bowel syndrome(IBS).Methods Rat model of visceral hy- persensitivity was established by intestinal acetic acid irritation in,neonate rats with the age of 8 to 21 days. The abdomi- nal withdrawal reflex(AWR)threshold of those rats was evaluated and the content of 5-HT in colon and serum was de- tected before and after medication. Results Shugan Jianpi Decoction could increase the AWR threshold of the model rats and reduce 5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)in colon and serum. Conclusion Acetic acid irritation in neonate rats can result in chronic visceral hypersensitivity of adult rats, and Shugan Jianpi Decoction could significantly enhance the pressure sensation threshold of IBS rats. The mechanism may be connected with the increase of 5-HT in colon and blood.
