Abstract

Objective To investigate the prevalence of human papilloma virus(HPV) and distribution of HPV genotypes in cervical cancer patients in Shantou so as to discuss the correlations between HPV genotypes and the type of the tumor. Methods A total of 125 cervical cancer patients hospitalized in our hospital from January 2006 to June 2008 underwent HPV genotype analysis carried out using genechip technique which can identify 23 genotypes of HPV.Infection rates of HPV and each HPV genotype were calculated, and the correlations between HPV genotypes and cancer types were discussed. Results Of the 125 cervical cancer cases,116(92.8%) were HPV positive.Nine HPV genotypes including HPV6,11,16,18,31,33,45,58,59 were detected.Further,3 cases(2.6%) were infected with single low-risk genotypes(HPV6,11) and 82 cases(65.6%) were infected with single high-risk genotypes(HPV16,18,45,59);22 cases(17.6%)of dual infections and 9 cases(7.8%) of triple infections were detected.HPV16(59.5%) was the most common genotype, with the second most common HPV18(19.8%).Conclusion Various HPV genotypes were detected in cervical cancer patients in Shantou Area, most of which were high-risk,with HPV16 and HPV18 being the most common types.Dual infections of different genotypes exist.HPV infection rate in squamous cancer is higher than that in adenocarcinoma.
