Abstract
Objective To observe the effect of periodontal initial therapy on the level of glycolated hemoglobin(HbA1c),triglycerides(TG),total cholesterol(TC)and periodontal status in type 2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis. Methods Twenty type 2 diabetes patients with periodontitis were selected and randomly divided into two groups:periodontal therapy group and control group. The periodontal therapy group received periodontal initial therapy, the periodontal clinic index and HbA1c,TG,TC were determined before treatment and at 4 weeks,8 weeks after treatment. The control group received oral hygiene instruction and used dental floss or interdental brush. The indexes determined were the same as the therapy group. Results After periodontal initial therapy, all periodontal clinic index of the therapy group and the level of HbAIc and TC at 4,8 weeks after treatment were reduced significantly(P0.05).After oral hygiene instruction, plaque index of the control group at 4,8 weeks was reduced significantly(P0.05),probing depth and the level of HbA1c at 8 weeks were reduced significantly(P0.05).Conclusions The periodontal initial therapy could effectively reduce the level of HbA1c and TC in type 2 diabetes mellitus with periodontitis. The effective oral hygiene measure could reduce the level of HbA1c in some degree.
