The effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on glycolsylated hemoglobin in aged patients with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis

Abstract

Objective:To investigate the effect of non-surgical periodontal therapy on levels of blood glucose(GLU) and glycosylated hemoglobin(HbA1c) in aged patients with type 2 diabetes and periodontitis. Methods:107 patients with type 2 diabetic in periodontitis were selected and divided into 2 different groups according to their HbA1c levels. Their were well-controlled group(A group) and uncontrolled group(B group) .Their probing depth(PD) ,attachment loss(AL) ,the value of GLU and HbA1c were assessed before treatment and 4 months after a non-surgical periodontal therapy. Results:There was a significant difference in periodontal condition between A group and B group(P0.01) .There was a significant improvement of periodontal condition after non-surgical periodontal therapy,(P0.01) .The effect of treatment in A group was better than B group's,and the difference was significant(P0.01) . After the periodontal therapy,BLU and HbA1c were reduced significantly(P0.05) . Conclusion:Periodontal condition is influenced by different control levels of GLU in aged patients with type-2 diabetes and periodontitis. Non-surgical periodontal therapy can effectively reduce the value of GLU,HbA1c and significantly improve periodontal condition in aged type-2 diabetes patients with periodontitis.
