Abstract

Objective To investigate the effect of periodontal initial therapy on the level of glycosy lated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of elderly patients with type 2 diabeties mellitus and periodontitis. Methods Forty elderly patients with type 2 diabeties mellitus and periodontitis were divided into two groups: periodontal therapy group and control group depend on their demands and situation. The periodontal therapy group received initial therapy, the periodontal clinic index(probing depth, bleeding index, plaque index)and HbA1c were determined before treatment and at 4 weeks, 12 weeks,24 weeks after treatment. The control group did not received any periodontal therapy, the periodontal clinic index and HbA1c were determined at begining and 24 weeks after treatment. Results After initial therapy, all periodontal clinic index at 4, 12, 24 weeks after treatment were reduced significantly(P0.01), HbA1c at 12,24 weeks after treatment were (7.88±0.45)、(7.80±0.87)%, as comparand to (9.06±0.71)% before treatment, were reduced significantly too(P0.01). While in control group, there were no significantly differences in all periodontal clinic index and HbA1c(all P0.01). Conclusions The result of periodontal initial therapy in aged type 2 diabetic patients with periodontitis is satisfied , it can improve periodontal conditions and also can reduce the level of HbA1c of patients.
