On the Historical-Cultural Origins of Polyphonic Morphology of Road Blocking Songs of the Dong Nationality

The Road Blocking Songs of the Dong Nationality in China are usually heard in red days,especially for either marriage ceremony or holiday celebrating.On such happy occasions,group of singers from outside villages are invited for the performance of Road Blocking Songs.With a long history,the polyphonic morphology of Road Blocking Songs is deeply rooted in the development of the national culture of the Dong Nationality.This paper has discussed its historical-cultural origins from the following four aspects: Yueye,a collective visiting of singers to other villages;night singing performance of the young people;the local convention of antiphonal singing;and the language of the Dong Nationality.
