Application of Serum Procalcitonin in Illness Monitoring and Prognosis Prediction of Patients with Sepsis

Abstract

Objective To explore the application of serum procalcitonin in illness monitoring and prognosis prediction in patients with sepsis.Methods A total of 72 patients with sepsis visiting Fujian Provincial Hospital during November 2008 and September 2011 were recruited in observation group and 70 non-sepsis patients visiting the same hospital during the same period were recruited in control group.The patients with sepsis were subdivided into survival group(40 cases) and death group(32 cases) in accordance with their prognosis.Serum PCT was detected and compared.Results The serum PCT level of the observation group was significantly higher than that of the control group(P0.05).It was also significantly higher in the death group than in the survival group(P0.05).Conclusions Serum PCT level is dramatically elevated in patients with sepsis and it affects the prognosis of the patients.It can be used as the marker of illness monitoring and prognosis prediction of the patients with sepsis.
